MEXICO, NY – A team of professional artists traveled to Oswego County BOCES (OCB) recently to select staff-submitted artwork to be exhibited at the “On My Own Time” art exhibition at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse.

The exhibition was started in the 1970s by the Cultural Resources Council of Syracuse and Onondaga County in partnership with the Everson Museum of Art. The goal of the exhibit is to bring together local artists from Central New York employers to celebrate and promote their creative talents. In recent years, well over 20 businesses have participated in this program, allowing their employees to highlight their often unknown artistic talents.

Diane Shumway is pictured with her pencil drawing titled ‘My Dad.’ This drawing along with Rhoda Cunningham’s ‘Diamond Island’ photograph will be displayed this fall at the “On My Own Time” exhibition at the Everson Museum of Art. Rhoda Cunningham was unavailable for a photograph with her winning piece of art.The team of professionals who visited the OCB campus was, once again, most impressed by the numerous employee submissions.

This year, four pieces of art have been selected for the upcoming exhibition.

They are: “Underground Railroad” quilt – by Theresa Burmingham, Special Education Department “Diamond Island” photograph – by Rhonda Cunningham, Operations and Maintenance Department “My Dad” pencil drawing – by Diane Shumway, Job Coach
Copper and Oak box – by Thomas Pullen, Multi-Occ/Special Education Department.

Marsha Wheeler, Arts-in-Education Coordinator at Oswego County BOCES spearheads OCB’s participation in this program, planning and preparing the local display at BOCES.

Tom Pullen is holding his copper and oak handcrafted box and Theresa Burmingham is standing with her hand-sewn ‘Underground Railroad’ quilt.Wheeler said, “This is a great way to celebrate the talents of our employees” and is pleased with the number of high quality submissions she received this year.

OCB staff and their families are encouraged to visit the exhibition at the Everson Museum of Art which runs from Oct. 10 through Nov. 16.

The museum will hold a reception on Oct. 10 to recognize the selected artists.

The museum is located at 401 Harrison St. in downtown Syracuse.

Oswego County BOCES participation in “On My Own Time” is due in part to the Cultural Resources Council’s Decentralization Program and a grant received from the New York State Council on the Arts.
