Catholic Charities Receives Funding

FULTON, NY – Catholic Charities of Oswego County is one of 38 community-based agencies in New York State that have been awarded funding through the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program by the Nutrition Consortium of NYS, an anti-hunger advocacy organization located in Albany.

Through state and federal funding available for the NOEP, Catholic Charities of Oswego County will conduct outreach and education activities in order to increase awareness about and participation in the Food Stamp Program.

The Food Stamp Program, the nation’s premiere defense against hunger, is designed to provide nutritional support to families, working adults and older adults struggling to purchase nutritious food.

However, statewide, approximately 44% of the eligible households are not receiving the food stamp benefits for which they are eligible.

Many of the eligible households that do not participate in the Food Stamp Program are not aware that they may be eligible.

The purpose of the NOEP grant is to educate the public about the many benefits that food stamps bring to a community and to help eligible households to apply for and receive food stamp benefits.

Last year, NOEP-funded agencies assisted more than 20,000 households in getting nutritious food through the Food Stamp Program.

Many of these households were families who were also educated about the benefits of the Summer Food Service and School Meals Programs.

The use of these federal nutrition programs improve the quality of life for struggling families by providing the food that they need to perform better at work and at school.

Catholic Charities of Oswego County has been chosen to conduct education and outreach activities in Oswego County because of our experience in serving the needs of people in our community.

This knowledge will enable us to reach many potentially eligible people and help them to access the Food Stamp Program and other federal nutrition assistance programs.
