FULTON, NY – Members of the Cayuga Community College Criminal Justice Society recently presented the United Way of Greater Oswego County with a check in support of the agency’s annual campaign.
The students, along with the support of faculty and staff, raised the money by holding a number of events throughout the 2007 – 2008 semesters.
John Lamphere, who teaches Criminal Justice and American History at Cayuga Community College, said that the idea to support local charitable organizations by holding these events came from Criminal Justice Society president, Ms. Jan Baum and other student members.
“Cayuga Community College is proud to support the efforts of the United Way of Greater Oswego County. Faculty and staff members encouraged the students and volunteered our time and materials to help make these events a success,†explained Lamphere.
During the past year the students raised money by holding a ‘Jailhouse Rock’ event, pizza sales, hot dog and hamburger sales, and a chili cook-off contest just to name a few.
Lamphere praised the students for their efforts and recognized the United Way of Greater Oswego County for the impact it has on the community.
“Supporting the United Way is a great cause as the United Way provides monies to a diverse grouping of not-for-profit organizations. If the United Way was not there to provide these monies, then where would they come from? Further, Cayuga Community College is a dedicated sponsor of the United Way. Our Provost, Cathleen McColgin even serves as member of the United Way’s Board of Directors. The efforts of the students in our Criminal Justice Society is yet another way for us to demonstrate our support for the United Way’s efforts to improve the quality of life in our community,” added Lamphere.
Executive Director of the United Way of Greater Oswego County, Melanie Trexler, was impressed with the enthusiasm and dedication that the students and staff at Cayuga Community College showed for these events and for their willingness to raise funds for the United Way.
“It was great to see the students, faculty and staff of Cayuga Community College come together to be involved with these events. It was truly a labor of love for them as they told me many times that helping the United Way is a very rewarding experience for them. We are very appreciative of their support. I can’t thank them enough,†said Trexler.
