It was a short stay near the top for Richard Ravitch.

Governor Paterson appointed the well-regarded downstate political figure to be his Lieutenant Governor at the height of the State Senate leadership crisis, even though his opponents said Paterson violated the state Constitution in doing so.

Tuesday, a judge said the opponents were right.  “…(N)either the constitution nor legislative enactment authorized the governor to make the appointment,” State Supreme Court Justice William LaMarca wrote.

Paterson said he will appeal.

Republican Senate leader Dean Skelos claimed victory.

As for Ravitch, he told the NY Daily News:  “If it is ultimately held by the Court of Appeals that this was not appropriate, I will have had an interesting few weeks and be able to spend a lot more time with my grandchildren.”
