Deadline Extended To Apply For Rebates

Submitted by Senator Jim Wright, R,C,I-Watertown

If you have not yet applied for your property tax rebate, you still have time. The Legislature recently passed a bill during the October special session that extends the deadline to apply for the rebate from Nov. 30 to Dec. 31.

This legislation ensures that all eligible property taxpayers will have an opportunity to receive the rebate they deserve.

There are several ways you can apply for your rebate if you have not already done so. When applications were originally mailed out in August and September, each application listed a unique STAR code. If you still have this application, you can use the STAR code to apply online at “http://www.tax.state.ny.us”.

If you no longer have your application, you can apply without your STAR code by printing a paper application from the Tax and Finance website. You can also contact my office for this form. Finally, the Tax and Finance Department recently mailed out new applications, with the STAR code, to all homeowners who have not yet applied. You can also fill out this application and mail it in to Tax and Finance.

Remember, your rebate check is in addition to the property tax relief you already receive through the STAR program, and which is already shown on your school tax bill.

If you have already applied for your check, via online or paper application, but have not yet received your check, there could many reasons for the delay. The most likely reason is your application is being reviewed manually, which takes longer than electronic processing. You can check on the status of your application by calling the STAR hotline at 1-877-678-2769. You can also contact my office at (315) 785-2430 with any questions.

Property tax relief is an issue that truly matters to residents of Jefferson, Oswego and St. Lawrence Counties. I will continue to work to advance measures that save money for the hardworking, overburdened taxpayers of New York State.
