Athletes from two classes at Granby Elementary School were given an “Olympic†sized send-off from students and staff at the school last week. Students and staff lined the hallways with signs and chants of “bring home gold†as the Olympic theme played from speakers at the school. The athletes moved down the hallways with large smiles, thumbs up, and arms raised in triumph as they headed to board the buses that would take them to the Olympic venue. Bad weather forced the event date to be delayed a week, but Granby Principal Barb Hubbard, who orchestrated the school send-off would not have cancelled it for the world. “These kids are great,†she said. “They inspire the entire school.†Other staff members echoed the sentiment adding, “The classes at Granby add a richness to the building.â€ÂÂ
Granby Student Council members traveled to the Special Olympics event to be “buddies†with the participants from Granby.
The Special Olympics were held at Cicero-North Syracuse High School which featured athletes from the Central New York area.
