The roof repair project at Kenney Middle School in Hannibal is coming in under budget so far.
Outside construction official Phil Wise told the Board of Education Wednesday night that the $330,000 project has come in about $52,000 under budget. About $48,000 of the surplus remains.
Any money left over from the roofing project will be applied to other phases of the construction project. “We’re protecting the budget,” Wise said. “We’re building a contingency for the project.”
Wise said the padding has allowed construction crews to deal with some unexpected issues, such as the asbestos they found when they began tearing off sections of the roof. Asbestos is very expensive to remove because it’s a dangerous substance and the rules for removal are extensive.
Asbestos removal was to have begun at midnight Wednesday.
About half of the roof is being removed and rebuilt. The work is being done in sections, with the last piece projected to be done in the last week of August.
Skylights are also being removed and, if cracked, replaced.
The metal on the edge of the roof will be put in place after school resumes in September. Chris Kelly of Bovis Lend Lease, one of the firms working on the project, said the metal edging is typically put on after school resumes and is not a distraction.
Superintendent Mike DiFabio said the district would make sure there are no odors left in the building from the roof work when students return to school.
