Hannibal Schools Nearing Appointment of Temp Superintendent; Special Meeting Tonight on Other Issues

Hannibal’s Board of Education is in the midst of naming an interim Superintendent of Schools but has not begun the search for a permanent superintendent.

Board President Matt Henderson read a prepared statement at a recent public meeting that revealed that the board is narrowing down its list of candidates to hold the job on a temporary basis.

Nine months ago, the board rejected a contract extension for Superintendent Mike DiFabio, after DeFabio negotiated the extension with the board’s President and Vice President.

Then-President Dale Young said at the time that DiFabio turned down his request to renegotiate and is opting to retire.  DiFabio has never disputed Young’s account but has given hints that that’s not the whole story.

Since then, the board has hired a consulting firm to help it search for a new superintendent and in December approved DiFabio’s reitrement agreement.

But the appointment of an interim superintendent is a signal that when DiFabio leaves June 30, 13 months after DiFabio decided to retire, there will not be a permanent replacement in place.

In his statement, Henderson promised “as the process moves forward, the Board of Education will include all stakeholders and the community when the search for a permanent superintendent begins.”

Meantime, the Board of Education holds a special meeting tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the Distance Learning Laboratory.  Here’s the agenda:
