OSWEGO, NY – Junior high-age students have the opportunity to spend two days in the real world of hospital health care at A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital in Fulton this summer. M.A.S.H. Camp – which stands for Medical Academy of Science & Health – will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 19 and 20.

The two-day camp is co-sponsored by the hospital, Central New York Area Health Education Center (CNYAHEC), and Excellus BlueCross Tim Clark, a participant in Lee Memorial Hospital’s 2007 M.A.S.H. Camp, follows the instructions of Radiological Technologist Liz Byrne in placing an item on the X-ray table. This year’s camp takes place Aug. 19 and 20. “This is our seventh year of providing M.A.S.H. Camp at Lee Memorial Hospital,” said Cathy Hogan, R.N., B.S.N., interim director of nursing. “It’s an excellent opportunity for local teens to spend two days immersed in hands-on learning that ranges from analyzing blood samples to reading X-rays.”

Leslie Kannus, program manager for CNYAHEC, noted that M.A.S.H. Camp helps to encourage young people to explore health professions and consider career opportunities they might not otherwise be aware of.

“Each year we co-sponsor numerous M.A.S.H. Camps across our 14-county Central New York region. We’re happy to continue collaborating with our local hospitals and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield to support innovative and fun ways for young people to learn about health careers,” she said.

CNYAHEC also co-sponsors with Excellus BCBS two weeklong resident camps for high school students. HealthQuest is hosted at Ithaca College from July 7-11 and MedQuest at SUNY Upstate Medical University from July 14-18.

Parents are reminded that children who are accepted to participate in M.A.S.H. Camp need to have up-to-date immunizations and the hospital requires documentation from a physician. Also, each child who attends M.A.S.H. Camp will need to have a tuberculin skin test, or PPD, before attending.

More than 70 junior-high age students from all over Oswego County and parts of Onondaga County have participated in Lee Memorial’s previous M.A.S.H. camps. missing or outdated ad config
