FULTON – With the support of Sen. Chuck Schumer, the City of Fulton Fire Dept. has been awarded a $1.062 million grant to hire four new firefighters, said Fulton Fire Chief Adam Howard.
“Our city is grateful for Senator Schumer’s help to secure this grant, which will ensure that the additional staffing needs of our fire department will be covered for the next three years,” Fulton Mayor Deana Michaels said. “Thanks also to Chief Howard for applying for this grant. Overall, this saves our city money, gives us broader coverage and makes our fire department stronger.”
According to Howard, the Staffing for Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant provides capacity dollars to hire staff for the length of the grant.
“Essentially, this means we can hire and cover costs over the next three years for four firefighters. At the end of the grant period, staffing and capacity are reassessed and decisions on next steps will be made at that time.” Howard said.
