Smith Wins Fulton Common Council Primary; Incumbent Legislator Gearsbeck Loses GOP Backing

Former Fulton Alderman Dana Smith won the right to make a second try for the Common Council.  He won Tuesday’s Republican primary election against former Common Council President Ken Myers, 59-37.

Smith was appointed to the Council when Myers resigned in 2008, after Myers had been arrested for allegedly helping his son convince a person to tell a lie to police to save Myers’s son from a DWI charge.  Myers pleaded guilty and apologized.

Elsewhere, Republicans rejected Art Gearsbeck, the incumbent county legislator from a North Shore district.  John Martino won the Republican endorsement, 225-178. Gearsbeck angers Republicans by voting independently, often with the minority Democrats.

Incumbent Palermo Republican Barbara Brown won her primary challenge.
