‘Guiding Eyes’ Featured At April 28 Fulton Lions Meeting

Joy Hawksby, regional manager of the Puppy Raiser program of Guiding Eyes For The Blind, was guest speaker at the Fulton Lions Club April 28 meeting. Fred Aldrich, club president, and Keno, Hawksby’s 11-month-old golden retriever in training for Guiding Eyes, joins her. Hawksby, who has worked with Guiding Eyes since 1999, presented an overview of the program which provides thousands of blind and visually impaired people with specially bred and trained dogs that grant them dignity and greater independence. Puppy raisers take eight-week-old puppies into their homes for 12 to 16 months of nurturing and education, and then return them to Guiding Eyes for guide dog or autism service dog training. The Fulton club is one of the largest and most active in their district. Lions clubs are committed to sight and hearing preservation. The Fulton Lions Club, also know for their Lions Loot Sweepstakes and Labor Day Duck Derby, supports Guiding Eyes and provides financial assistance for those in need of eyeglasses, eye exams and hearing aids to residents in the Greater Fulton area.
