Hastings Man Arrested For Child Sex Abuse Distribution, Identity Theft Charges

HASTINGS, NY – Acting on tips for suspicious and potentially illegal online activity that began in 2022, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police began investigating multiple online accounts, which led to a home in the town of Hastings.

Interviews with residents and examination of devices in the home determined that one of the residents, 30-year-old Jared M. August, had used online accounts to obtain and distribute child sexual abuse material.  It was also found that August had created one of those accounts using the name and photos of a local person who he did not know and assumed their identity online.

This account was created using information available to August on this person’s social media. August presented himself as this person and shared pictures of their children with other users, telling them that he was offering the children up for sexual encounters in exchange for money.  The investigation uncovered no evidence August had contact with or intended to have contact with the children in the pictures.

August was arrested on April 6 2023, for eight counts of Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Child and one count of Identity Theft in the second degree. He was arraigned in Oswego County CAP Court and remanded to Oswego County Jail on $15,000 cash bail or $35,000 bond

This incident is still under investigation and if anyone has any information regarding Jared August, or knows a possible victim, you are asked to contact the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office at 315-349-3411.
