The Literacy Coalition of Oswego County (LCOC) has partnered with the Weston T. Hyde Oswego County Educational Foundation to assist in securing funding for LCOC services, it was announced by Jon Spaulding, president of the LCOC Leadership Council.
“By working with the Hyde Foundation, we have the advantages of representation by a tax-exempt 501 (c) 3 foundation, combined with the resources they can provide to assist us in raising funds for literacy education,” Spaulding said. “We are grateful to them for joining us in our mission to improve the lives of all the citizens of our county by improving literacy and raising literacy awareness.”
Michael J. Egan, president of the Hyde Foundation board and former superintendent of the Fulton City School District, welcomed LCOC as a foundation partner. “The foundation is delighted to add the Literacy Coalition to its list of organizations with whom we partner, “ Egan said. Our purpose is to create new and enhance existing educational opportunities for Oswego County residents; to secure funding sources not currently available to BOCES and the school districts; and to build partnerships through incentives.
“Among the services we will make available to LCOC are: grant administration, grant writing assistance, direct mail fundraising, and more.”
The Hyde foundation is entirely volunteer driven, Egan said. All donations support the structure of the Foundation and the educational activities it sponsors.
The LCOC is a growing coalition of more than 36 local organizations.
These organizations work together to address the literacy needs of people of all ages.

An estimated 40 to 44 million adults in the United States demonstrate skills in the lowest level of prose, document, and quantitative proficiencies.
Many are unable to total an entry on a deposit slip, locate the time and place on a meeting form, or identify a piece of specific information in a brief news article (ProLiteracy Worldwide).
In Oswego County, close to 17,000 adults cannot read above a fifth grade reading level. With the help of volunteers, donors and advocates, the Literacy Coalition of Oswego County helps adults develop their basic literary skills.
