OSWEGO – The H. Lee White Maritime Museum, located at 1 W. First St. Pier in Oswego, has come alongside the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary (USCGA) and New York Sea Grant (NYSG) to offer a free museum pass to each youth who pre-registers for the free Youth Boater Safety Certification Course held on Saturday, Feb. 17 during the Central New York Boat Show.

The youth course runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in a conference room at the Expo Center at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, N.Y. It is open to youth aged 10 to 17 years and led by instructors from USCGA Flotilla 21 and New York Sea Grant.

The course certifies youth to legally operate a motorized boat or personal watercraft on New York waters in compliance with Brianna’s Law, which requires all operators of recreational motorized vessels complete a state-approved boating safety course by 2025.

Youth must successfully complete the eight-hour training course and same-day proctored exam to receive their certification. The course is offered free of charge and participants are asked to provide their own lunch.

Pre-registration is required to ensure course seating and receive the free museum pass along with three free admission passes to the CNY Boat Show, which runs from Feb. 15 to 18. Call NYSG’s Oswego office at 315-312-3042 to sign up.

The H. Lee White Maritime Museum features a collection of more than 4,000 artifacts, images and models of military, commercial and recreational vessels, along with artwork and archival resources. It is also home to the 1850s topsail schooner “Ontario” and the U.S. Army’s World War II tugboat “LT-5, Major Elisha K. Henson” used in the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. A current exhibit at the museum features models of Lake Ontario shipwrecks. Learn more at https://hlwmm.org.
