Multiple Alarms In The Port City January 3rd

OSWEGO – Emergency crews in Oswego were kept busy today as they responded to several emergency incidents. In addition to responding to several medical emergencies, Firefighters also responded to a structure fire on East 8th Street, and a motor vehicle into a building and a broken gas line on West Bridge Street.

Around 11 am this morning, the Oswego Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire on East 8th Street near Riley Elementary School. Oswego Fire crews arrived quickly and found the multiple-family home filled with smoke. Oswego Firefighters made entry and located the fire on the first floor. A quick knockdown of the fire resulted in moderate damage to one room and minor smoke damage throughout. The three occupants were able to escape safely and were assisted by the American Red Cross. Oswego Firefighters were assisted on the scene by the Oswego Police Department, National Grid, and the Oswego County Fire Coordinator’s Office. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

a broken natural gas line at the Fastrac gas station

Just after 2 pm this afternoon, the Oswego Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle into a building and a broken natural gas line at the Fastrac gas station on West Bridge Street. Firefighters arrived quickly to find a patient on the ground being assisted by bystanders. Firefighters worked quickly to provide patient care to the driver of the vehicle and evacuate the immediate area due to the uncontrolled gas flow. The patient was transported to an area hospital by Menter Ambulance. With a dense population and occupied school in the immediate area, Oswego’s Firefighters, Police Officers, and DPW crews all worked quickly and in unison creating a safe perimeter, limiting foot traffic and closing down West Bridge Street until the gas could be controlled. National Grid’s gas crew responded to the scene, ultimately digging and clamping the line until final repairs could be made. The City of Oswego Code Enforcement Department and the City of Oswego Engineering Department also assisted at the scene. The building sustained moderate damage to the structure, as well as to the gas, water, and electrical service, and will likely be closed for several days to make repairs.
