Oswego County Mourns Loss of Highway Department Employee

OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County Legislature is deeply saddened to announce the death of Oswego County Highway Department employee Peter Caufield, who passed away early this morning while responding to a roadway hazard.

At approximately 4:15 am., Caufield was working to remove a fallen tree that had obstructed a county roadway. During the operation, there was a medical emergency, resulting in his passing at the scene. Additional details are currently under review as county officials work with the appropriate authorities.

“It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of Peter Caufield. Our prayers go out to his family,” said James Weatherup, Chairman of the Oswego County Legislature. “Peter was a dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly to keep our roads safe. His loss is felt deeply across our entire community.”

County officials are ensuring that support services are available to employees and first responders affected by the incident. The County will release further information regarding arrangements or memorial acknowledgments as it becomes available, in accordance with the wishes of the family.

Oswego County extends its heartfelt condolences to the Caufield family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
