OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County Legislature joined the national recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month during its April 9 meeting. Its Human Services Committee welcomed staff members of the County’s Department of Social Services (DSS) to recognize their hard work in serving the families of Oswego County.
The proclamation presented to them stated, in part, that “child abuse and neglect is a very important concern” and that prevention “depends on the involvement of people throughout the community.”
Legislator Michael Solowy, District 23, chairman of the Legislature’s Human Services Committee, continued reading, “child maltreatment often occurs when people find themselves in stressful situations, without community resources, and don’t know how to cope. Many of these cases stem from situations that are preventable in an engaged and supportive community and can be reduced by making sure each family has the assistance they need to raise their children in a safe, nurturing environment.”
The proclamation concluded, “Effective child maltreatment prevention programs succeed because of partnerships created among social service and law enforcement agencies, schools and civic organizations, and faith and business communities.”
Oswego County Department of Social Services Director of Protective Services Meghan Rose addressed the group, saying, “As we recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month, I want to thank our staff and community partners who work hard every day to support the children of Oswego County and strengthen their families. Prevention is truly a shared responsibility and our efforts would not be possible without the collaboration of many.”
She also thanked the County Legislature for its continued support of their mission to serve the families in Oswego County.
The Oswego County Legislature’s Human Services Committee oversees the Department of Social Services. In addition to Legislator Solowy, committee members include Vice Chairwoman Noelle Salmonsen, District 21; Joseph Arduini, District 22; Frank Bombardo, District 7; Richard Kline, District 12; Linda Lockwood, District 11; and Ryan Taylor, District 25.
