Oswego County response to Novelis fire Nov. 20 from Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup

OSWEGO – We’re deeply saddened to learn of today’s fire at the Novelis aluminum plant in Scriba. Thankfully, there were no injuries and we’re grateful for the swift fire response.

Our county fire coordinator’s office, along with local fire departments and those from neighboring counties, have been nothing short of amazing. Together, they are helping the Novelis fire team extinguish the fire and providing back-up support to those on-site teams.

The timing of this fire was a challenge as many local fire departments rely on volunteers. As many volunteers are at work and unavailable to respond to daytime incidents, mutual aid is a vital part of fire service, ensuring that communities have sufficient personnel and resources when they’re needed most.

I would encourage residents who have an interest in serving their community to reach out to their local volunteer fire department and ask how they can help – whether it’s fighting fires or more general tasks in the fire station.

We know that Novelis has been working diligently to restore their facilities since the fire in September and look forward to their ongoing progress. Now and always, we continue to stand with Novelis and their people.
