Authorities Probe Burglary At Mexico Church

MEXICO, NY – Investigators are asking for the public’s help in catching whoever burglarized the Mexico Catholic church over the weekend.

Some time between 10 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday, somebody broke into St. Anne Mother of Mary Church, according to Oswego County Sheriff Reuel Todd.

They did quite a bite of damage and stole some items as well, he said.

“What they stole was some very sentimental objects to the church,” he said, describing them as (gold and silver) chalices and several other religious items.

He estimates the objects are valued at approximately $3,000.

The Sheriff is asking that area pawn shop owners be on the lookout for anyone bringing in any religious items.

Anyone one with any information regarding the break-in is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department at 349-3302.

“It’s a shame someone did this. Churches should be off limits,” the Sheriff said. “We’d like to help father get back what was taken. I hope (the thief) comes forward. It would be a lot better for them to come to us instead of us coming to get them.”
