Recently, kindergarten students at the Kingsford Park Elementary School were able to play a game with the jayvee girls’ basketball team. However, the “game” was basketball.

Kindergarten teacher Mary Lynne Maxwell said, “It is wonderful that Miss Tremblay has brought her team to our classroom. She is so creative and thoughtful. She knows that kindergarten needs help because we have lots of kindergartners.”

Continuing she said, “She used her basketball team in a very creative way to have them come in and participate in Math games. The games go hand-in-hand with the kindergarten curriculum and our ‘Everyday Math’ program. This is fun. It is different and it is manipulative as they play games.”

It wasn’t one-on-one with each student, but each basketball player was in their own zone to play a particular game with three, four or five kindergartners.

Smiles, laughs and high fives were the order of the day as youngsters celebrated with each successful move.

Maxwell was excited over the presence of the older students. She said, “They are great role models as the kindergartners look at them like they are rock stars. This is a big deal and a very special treat.

Players joining their coach were Courtney Kelly, Katie Knopp, Nikki McCarthy, Kelly Chetney, Emily Heagerty, Allison Hare, Rachael Purtell, Maddy Muckey and Julia Lavery.

Coach Tremblay noted, “The jayvee girls’ basketball team members know it is important to help out and they wanted to give back to the community through this type of community service. I am really proud of them as they have taken their own time to come out, help the younger kids and act as role models.”
