OSWEGO, NY - City of Oswego firefighters and paramedics have recently received training in the use of diagnostic 12 lead electrocardiograms (ECGs) on patients who may be suffering from some type of cardiac ailment.
“Our advanced providers are now capable of obtaining an emergency 12 lead ECG right in the patient’s home if necessary,†said Assistant Chief Jeff McCrobie.
These ECGs are similar to the ECG that you might receive at your doctor’s office during a physical.
The ECG can then be printed out and provided to the physician on arrival at the emergency department or cardiac catheter lab.
The printout can even be faxed to the receiving hospital and in some cases reviewed by the physician before the patient even arrives.
“This new training and technology will allow us to diagnose and treat conditions such as a heart attack sooner, and will result in better patient care,†said McCrobie.
