OSWEGO, NY – At its meeting Monday night, the Physical Services Committee gave favorable recommendations to two requests for use of public space.
Tony Leotta, city engineer, requested use of public space on behalf of Jeannine Pitters.
The contract purchaser of a single-family dwelling at 53 W. Fifth St. wants to install a new retaining wall with iron railing.
Mike Smith, DPW commissioner, requested use of public space on behalf of Nicki McDermott.
The SAF educator/trainer, representing Oswego County Opportunities, wants permission to display six free-standing, life-sized wooden figures in one of the city parks (to be determined at committee) as part of the “Silent Witness Imitative.
She also wants to turn the fountain in front of City Hall purple through the use of purple light bulbs for “Shine The Light on Domestic Violence,” a national campaign.
McDermott said she’d like to place the figures in East Park during October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The figures would be a man, a woman, a teen, two children and a dog. Each would have a story and statistics about the realistic impact of domestic violence has on individuals and the entire community, she explained.
Council President Ron Kaplewicz suggested placing the silhouettes on the hill portion of the park. It would give them good visibility and help protect them from possible vandalism, he noted.
The figures likely wouldn’t be in the way there either during the annual Great Pumpkin Fest in early October, Councilor Connie Cosemento pointed out.
“I’m sure that if they did create a problem, we could re-locate them for that weekend,” DPW Commissioner Mike Smith said. “I’m sure we can accommodate both events in the park.”
McDermott said she hopes to enlist the aid of some sororities and fraternities at SUNY Oswego to keep an eye on the figures.
