Dr. Mary Edwards Walker Day June 8, 2024

OSWEGO – Mayor Corradino announces that The Oswego Town Historical Society, The National Women’s History Museum, and the U.S Mint will hold a ceremony on Saturday, June 8th at the Oswego High School’s Robinson-Faust Theater at 2:00 p.m. to honor and celebrate Dr. Mary Edwards Walker and reveal the Dr. Walker quarter.

Dr. Mary Walker, a true American Pioneer, is one of only five women selected by the U.S. Mint for its American Women Quarters Program in recognition of her accomplishments and contributions to history. Dr. Walker, a native of the Town of Oswego, NY, honored and celebrated for being a Civil War Surgeon, women’s rights activist, abolitionist, the only female recipient of the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor, to date, and the second woman to obtain a medical degree in the United Sates.

A number of national organizations will attend the event, including the National Women’s history Museum, the U.S. Mint, the U.S. Army and the Whitman-Walker Health Clinic of Washington, D.C. Local, State, and federal representatives will also be on hand.
