OSWEGO – The introduction of a new tax roll agreement with Exelon Corporation was proposed and passed during Thursday night’s Oswego County Legislature meeting, June 11.

Legislator and Majority Leader Terry Wilbur presented the tax resolution with Nine Mile Nuclear Power Plant, urging its passage.

“This resolution sets forth a five-year agreement with Exelon; a full-value agreement for $152 million,” Wilbur said.

The Nine Mile Nuclear Power Plant was slated to shut down in 2017, posing widespread financial hardship throughout the county.

“I want to thank the team and everyone who was involved, who put this negotiation to work for us here, and brought this back,” Wilbur said.

Wilbur presented a second resolution that was approved by the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office, which would allow outside individuals to deposit money into an ATM type construct, set up in front of the Public Safety Center for detainees’ commissary use.

Wilbur described the plan, noting the help it would offer personnel overseeing the fund-transfer system now being used.

“It will definitely make it easier moving forward with the commissary and actually take care of a number of potential issues that we could see,” Wilbur said.

Legislator Stephen Walpole introduced a resolution for the Caughdenoy Road Bridge over the Oneida River that is in need of repair.

The bridge is co-owned by both Oswego and Onondaga Counties, located on County Route 50. Cost of the project is estimated at $1.3 million, with Oswego paying $650,000, or 50% of the total plan. Onondaga County will head up the project.

Other items on the agenda included:

  • A resolution urging the state of New York to pass along mandated Federal Medicaid money to Oswego County.
  • Oswego County received a CARES Act Grant offer in the amount of $30,000 to help offset a decline in revenues from COVID-19.
  • The Oswego County Health Department received an increase of $50,579 in grant money to help with the COVID-19 response.

All resolutions were passed. The full agenda can be found here.

County legislative meetings are held the second Thursday of every month.
