Former Oswego Schools Employee Admits to Child Sex Charge

Darrell Peckham admitted having had sexual contact with a 14 year old boy four years ago.

He pleaded guilty last Thursday in Cayuga County Court as part of a deal that will put him in jail for 75 days and on probation for 10 years, according to The Citizen newspaper of Auburn and reporter Nate Robson:

Cayuga County Judge Mark Fandrich said he was uncomfortable accepting 73-year-old Darrell Peckham’s plea in exchange for 75 days in jail and 10 years of probation, but decided to accept the deal because the victim agreed to it.

“I’m uncomfortable — I feel it’s too light — but seeing that the victim agrees with this disposition and doesn’t want to go through the ordeal of a trial, I’m going to accept it,” Fandrich said.

Peckham, of Cato, worked for more than a decade in the Oswego City School District as a social worker, leaving in 1992.  He also was director of Cayuga County’s Big Brother program.

Peckham was charged last May with sexually abusing a teenaged boy, brought to police by an adult man, who said he had also been abused by Peckham in incidents that stretch back to the 1970s.

Police believed at the time that there may have been other victims. missing or outdated ad config
