Fundraiser Set Saturday For Cancer Survivor

OSWEGO – On the heels of a successful St. Baldrick’s fundraiser comes another event aimed at assisting someone in need is scheduled this weekend.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation works to raise awareness and funding to support childhood cancer research.

Benefit flierOn Saturday, a fundraiser will start at noon to benefit one local young lady.

Makayla Walker, of Oswego, was diagnosed last fall with an abdominal desmoid tumor. It is so aggressive it is classified as a cancer. There are five other youngsters in the Oswego City School District suffering from this disease.

Makayla and her father, Shawn, were seen in part of the public service announcements that played on the big-screen TVs at Wednesday’s St. Baldrick’s event.

Shawn, seated behind his daughter, explained that the tumor in her belly was the size of a football.

She turned and corrected him. “It’s abdomen,” she said.

The fundraiser will be on Saturday at the American Legion, on West Bridge Street.

“There will be door prizes, raffles, a chicken barbecue, music and a lot more,” said Jennifer Losurdo one of the event organizers. “We’re doing what we can to help the family pay its medical costs and other bills.”

Everyone has been very generous and supportive, she added.

“We have some really great stuff for the auctions,” she said. “The barbecue tickets are selling very fast. There are tons and tons of raffles, Adirondack table and chair raffle, two-seat ride around at Oswego Speedway raffle, a TV raffle, more than 130 other raffles. It’s going to be packed in there!”

“I can’t believe all stuff they got for the fundraiser,” Shawn Walker said recently. “They’ve got tons of stuff!” (For a list of some of the donations, see below).

Makayla is currently undergoing a rigorous chemotherapy treatment at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse.

She said she is feeling good and is thankful for all the support she’s received.

To ensure she doesn’t fall behind academically, a tutor helps her with her school work.

The tumor is so large; doctors need to shrink it before attempting to remove it.

Makayla’s family has season tickets to see the Oswego State Laker hockey team; when she gets better, she wants to play hockey, Makayla said.

At Fitzhugh Park Elementary School, it’s become a fifth grade tradition to make projects out of Peeps.

Nicole Anthony created a Laker Hockey Peeps game against the “Plattsburgh Peeps” for classmate Makayla.

Holding the Peeps hockey rink are Hailey Sawyer, Anthony, Principal Donna Simmons, teacher Karen Cota and Alexis Vivlemore.
