July Was One Of The Warmest On Record

OSWEGO, NY – July 2011 goes into the record book as warmer and a bit drier than normal.

The average temperature last month was 74.0 degrees. That is 3.2 degrees warmer than normal.

“That makes it the seventh warmest July since 1845,” according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service. “Last July wound up number six; it was 74.1.”

The highest temperature was 95 degrees on the 21st and the lowest was 58 degrees on the 2nd.

There were 2 new records set, 93 degrees on the 11th and the 95-degree day.

“We had 3 days where it was 90 or higher and 13 days where it was 80 or higher,” Gregway said. “That’s more than half the month. Things were warm, definitely.”

The warmest July on record is 75.8 degrees in 1920.

July has been very warm, very recently, he added. Number 3 on the list is 1999. That is followed by 2005, 2006, 2010 and then this year, he pointed out. Only 1878 (at No. 2) breaks the string of recent warm Julys.

There were 8 times where the overnight low was in the 70s – including a streak of 3 in a row, the 21st to the 23rd, Gregway said.

Total precipitation for the month came in at 2.59 inches. That’s 0.44-inch below average.

The greatest precipitation in a 24-hour period was 1.26 inches on the 25th.

“If you take that out of the month, we are really below average,” Gregway observed.

Since the first of the year, precipitation stands at 26.56 inches, which is 3.64 inches above average.

The area received 77 percent of the possible amount of sunshine. That is 8 percentages above average.

There were only 4 cloudy days, which is 4 below average.

The number of partly cloudy days, 17, was 5 above average.

The number of clear days, 10, was 1 below average.

July had 5 thunderstorm days, which is 1 below average. Two of those days actually had 2 thunderstorms, Gregway said.

There weren’t any foggy days in July. That is average for the month.

The highest barometric pressure last month was 30.14 on the 16th and the lowest was 29.65 on 21st.

“There wasn’t a lot of wind in July,” Gregway said. “We had only 2 real windy days.”
