OSWEGO – Tonight’s Oswego Committee Meeting saw the introduction of Local Law Number 1 of 2024. The law will not be enacted until August 12th, and Oswego residents are encouraged to be involved in the coming meetings. The law will create a new department that will be the single authority over all technological assets owned, leased or utilized by Oswego County, with the goal of Government efficiency.
The purpose of the law is to “statutorily consolidate the various information technology related functions and duties heretofore performed by various departments of the County of Oswego a single county department except where otherwise required by law or state/federal regulations,” reads the law.
The department would be called The Department of Information Technology and will be under the supervision and direction of a Director of Information Technology, who will be appointed by the Oswego County Legislature for as fixed, two-year term, coinciding with the County Legislator. The director will be taking on the responsibilities of the Director of Central Services in addition to their own duties that come with the new law. The director will be reporting on their day-to-day operations to the County Administrator.
Some of the powers and duties of the new position include developing and managing the budget for the department, planning and supervision of the county’s computer network, planning and supervising maintenance on existing networks, as well as appointing a deputy director.
Next week common council meeting will have more discussion on the matter, and the council encourages any resident who has anything to say on the matter to come to next weeks meeting on July 22nd.
