NOAA Selects Superintendent for Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary

OSWEGO –  The City of Oswego is pleased to announce that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration (NOAA) has selected Stephanie Gandulla to serve as the first Superintendent of the Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary. Gandulla, who currently serves as Research Protection Coordinator at Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, brings extensive experience in marine resource protection, maritime heritage preservation, research, education, outreach and community engagement.

Throughout her career with NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, Gandulla has worked closely with communities, Tribal Nations, government agencies, local organizations and other partners to advance marine conservation and connect the public with the Great Lakes’ natural and cultural resources. She holds a master’s degree in Maritime Studies from East Carolina University and has extensive technical experience in scientific diving, marine operations, research and monitoring, interpretation, and resource protection. As Superintendent, Gandulla will provide leadership for the Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary and work with regional partners and stakeholders to advance its mission of protecting and conserving Lake Ontario’s significant marine resources and maritime heritage.

Gandulla’s extensive experience throughout the Great Lakes region positions her to build upon the strong foundation established for the sanctuary and foster continued collaboration among communities, agencies, organizations and stakeholders. Gandulla’s first official day as Superintendent is September 21, 2026. The City of Oswego looks forward to welcoming Gandulla to her new position and continuing to support the collaborative efforts surrounding the Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary.
