OSWEGO, NY – The “Flying Flamingoes†have flown to the next level of the Oswego County “Battle of the Books.â€ÂÂ
Allison Burnett, Shela Lamphier and Terilyn Pospesel comprised the winning team as they captured the Oswego Middle School competition.
Runners up were “Schwas†consisting of Adrienn MacDougall and Mackenzie Oatman.
Finishing third among the nine teams in competition was the “Batman 3†trio consisting of Adam Pauldine, Jessica Reynolds and Nicholas Stubba.
Karen Breen coached the winning team while Kelli Anderson coached the runners up and Tara Schraven the third place team.
The “Flying Flamingoes†advanced to the April 9 county wide competition that will be held at the Oswego High School Ralph M. Faust Theatre for the Performing Arts.
Oswego Middle School library media specialist Alice Barry said, “The ‘Battle of the Books’ is a reading motivation and comprehension program designed by the Alaska Association of School Librarians. The goals of the program are to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension and promote academic excellence.â€ÂÂ
At the Oswego Middle School 26 students participated in the program.
The other students participating included the “Funky Frogs†Alyssa Ferreira, Elisabeth Michaud and Kayla Van Sanford; the “Hungry Hippos†of Joseph Diment, Jeremy Galvin and Jordan Olinsky; the “Mad Hatters†with Zeb Emmons, Etson Collins and Emily McCabe; the “Novelettes†with Hannah Allen, Whitney Ford and Catherine Wells; the “Pen and the Sword†with Monica George, Emilea Reiner and Paige Ruel and the “Purple Pandas†with Erin Chetney, Rebecca Smith and Hailey Thompson.
Among the coaches were Debbie Sprague, Erin Platten, Debra Smith, Judy Cass, Jim Livingston and Suzanne Basualdo.
United Way’s “Success by Six†brought the program to Oswego County Schools and this is the second year the Oswego City School District has competed in the program.
Sponsoring the OMS event were United Way “Success by 6â€ÂÂ, the OMS Home and School Association and the OMS Student Council.
