OSWEGO — August 27, 2024 — Last night, the Oswego Common Council voted to approve Mayor Rob Corradino’s amended 2025 fiscal budget following a comprehensive review and productive workshop. Initially presented on August 12, 2024, the budget plan proposed a 5% tax increase—the first rise in city taxes in eight years.

During the budget workshop held on August 19, 2024, the Council successfully identified and implemented five additional cuts totaling $178,664. These reductions lowered the proposed tax increase to 3.63%, demonstrating the Council’s commitment to both fiscal responsibility and taxpayer relief.

The 2025 budget, which totals $56,446,453, includes a tax levy of 10.376%  ($13,519,100). Consequently, a home assessed at $90,000 will incur $933.84 in city taxes for the year.

This budget represents a remarkable turnaround from the initial review in July, which revealed an estimated $8 million shortfall that would have necessitated a 16% tax increase. Through collaborative efforts, Mayor Corradino, department heads, and city hall personnel were able to trim approximately $7.4 million from the original budget. The Council’s additional amendments brought the total reduction to over $7.5 million.

Mayor Corradino praised the collective efforts in crafting the budget, stating “While no tax increase is ideal, achieving a modest 3.63% increase after eight years is a significant accomplishment. This outcome reflects the dedication and hard work of our entire team. I extend my gratitude to the department heads and the Common Council for their commitment and collaboration in shaping the 2025 budget.”

The approved budget supports essential investments in infrastructure, public safety, and community services, ensuring continued progress and development for the city of Oswego.
