Oswego Council OKs Use of Public Space, City Property

OSWEGO, NY – At its meeting this week, the Common Council approved use of public space on behalf of a pair of residents as well as the use of city property for some others.

Gregory Thornton, owner and occupant of a single-family dwelling at 50 E. Cayuga St., wants to construct a five-foot by three-foot front entrance stoop.

Sandra Valenzuela, owner of Azteca Grill, 53 E. Bridge St., wants to construct a tile overhang, projecting three feet into public space, fronting on East Bridge Street, as part of façade improvements.

Councilors approved use of public property on behalf of Deanna Masuicca.

The race director for the fourth annual Novelis 10Kan Run/Walk/Cycling event to be held Sept. 18 wants to use Breitbeck Park on Sept. 17 – 18; and minimal use of the McCrobie Building the same days.

She also requested the closing of Lake Street from West Eighth Street to Liberty Street and also Sheldon Avenue from Washington Boulevard to Rudolph Road for the events on Sept. 18.

Eric Syrell’s request to use Breitbeck Park was also approved.

He spoke to the councilors during the public session, explaining that he wants to use the park on Aug. 28 for his small business grand opening and fan appreciation party for his racing team.

The new owner of Air Hop Inflatables and GoodTimes of Oswego said he wants to use the event in the park to showcase his party rental business.

The event will feature free chicken barbecue (half chicken) dinners to the first 200 people in attendance.

LaGraf’s Pub will sell alcohol during the event, in a secure area located away from where the events for children will take place, Syrell told the councilors.

It would be a fenced-in area, similar to the site in the park during Harborfest, only on a smaller scale, he pointed out.

The fan appreciation part of the event would include information booths for all of the racecar’s sponsors to hand out business cards and show samples of their work, like at a job fair, he explained.
