Oswego Council Recognizes 2 Aldermen

OSWEGO, NY – At its last meeting for 2009, the Oswego Common Council breezed through a relatively short agenda Monday night.

And, after taking care of business, they recognized councilors Sue Sweet (R-Third Ward) and Mike Joyce (R-Seventh Ward).

Neither councilor had sought re-election.

“I just want to take a second to thank my fellow councilors for their kindness,” Sweet said.

She also thanked all the city workers, in all departments, who have helped her during her tenure on the council.

“I have no regrets,” she added. “It’s bittersweet for me but, I am in transition, so we’ll see where that leads.”

She didn’t rule out a possible run for office in the future.

Joyce also said he has no regrets about leaving the council.

“I have no regrets. It was a pleasure,” he said. “I enjoyed working with everyone. Everyone on this council is doing what they think is best for the city.”

Joyce had relinquished his council seat in an unsuccessful bid for a position on the county legislature.

While he said he has no immediate plans, a return to the political arena is a possibility.

“I may explore running for county legislator again,” he said.

Council President Dan Donavan (R-Fifth Ward) presented the outgoing councilors with city mugs in recognition of their service.

He said he is looking forward to working with the two incoming councilors next year.

“I don’t think we can call them ‘rookies.’ They are pretty well versed in everything,” he said. “The city is facing some pretty tough times ahead. But if we all keep working together, I think we’ll be alright.”

The council will conduct its organizational meeting for 2010 on Friday. missing or outdated ad config
