Oswego County Celebrates 160 Years of Agricultural Fairs

The Oswego County Fairgrounds are bustling with activity as volunteers from across the county prepare for the annual fair. On July 22, historians spent the morning cleaning the heritage building to get it ready for this year’s visitors. SANDY CREEK – Staying true to the tradition of a family-oriented rural fair, the Agricultural Society of Oswego County, organizers of the 160th Oswego County Fair, have planned a full slate of activities from Aug. 9 through 13 at the Oswego County Fairgrounds, 291 Ellisburg St, Sandy Creek.

Visitors can get the hang of driving a tractor on a virtual tractor ride, learn about antique farm equipment, hydroponics and enjoy a dairy treat in the agricultural building throughout the fair’s duration.

Other daily events include cow patty bingo, a saw dust hunt, antique tractors and engines, dinner and bike drawings, and appearances by the Marvelous Mutts.

“The theme of this year’s fair is ‘Oswego County Fair Celebrates Our Local Farmers,’ “ said County Legislator Terry Wilbur, District 21, Hannibal, a member of the agricultural society’s board of directors. “Agriculture is a mainstay of Oswego County’s economy, and we take pride in recognizing the important role that family farms contribute to our quality of life. The board has worked throughout the year to plan a full slate of fun activities to share our agricultural heritage.”

Agri-Puppets, a fun family show that teaches the importance of farming, animals and agriculture with sing-a-longs and other activities will perform at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and at 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Opening day features harness racing at the grandstand at 11 a.m. The parade starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by fireworks at dusk.

Farmers of all ages have the chance to show their best stock and compete for ribbons in a variety of agricultural competitions.

Aug. 9, will include a youth poultry show at noon, followed by open show, and “little britches” show in the show ring at 2 p.m.

On Aug. 10, watch for youth and open llama and alpaca shows at 4 p.m.

Special agricultural events on Aug. 11 include the youth and open swine shows at 10 a.m., and the youth and open sheep shows at 3 p.m.

On Aug. 12, watch the youth goat show at 10 a.m., ADGA sanctioned goat show at 11 a.m., and the youth rabbit and cavy, along with open cavy, at 5 p.m.

Rounding out the schedule on Aug. 13, are the ARBA open sanctioned rabbit show at 8 a.m., and open horse, youth beef, and open beef show at 9 a.m.

There is free admission and free parking to the Oswego County Fair.

Admission of $10 will be charged to the demolition derbies Aug. 10 and Aug. 12, and the truck pulls Aug. 11.

Admission to the antique and out-of-field tractor pulls is $3 on Aug. 13.
