Oswego Man Stopped For Using Cell Phone While Driving Facing Drug Charges

OSWEGO, NY – At approximately 7:37 p.m. on March 8, an Oswego City Police officer on patrol observed a 2001 Dodge motor vehicle being operated in violation of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, specifically that the driver was allegedly utilizing a cellular telephone while operating the vehicle.

A traffic stop was initiated and the vehicle was stopped in the area of West Fifth and Albany streets.

The driver was identified as Michael J. Wiltsie, 50, of 10 Paloma St., Oswego.

Mr. Wiltsie was the sole occupant of the vehicle, although the vehicle is registered to his mother.

Further investigation and interview of Mr. Wiltsie at the scene of the traffic stop lead to the discovery of a quantity of marijuana inside the vehicle, according to the police.

Mr. Wiltsie was taken into custody and transported to the Oswego City Police Department, where members of the Criminal Investigations Division began assisting in the investigation.

Further information was developed which lead to the issuance of a search warrant for Mr. Wiltsie’s residence.

According to the police report, upon execution of the search warrant, police seized approximately 8 pounds of marijuana, with an estimated street value of $20,000.

Also seized from within the residence was nearly $6,000 in cash, as well as numerous other items of paraphernalia commonly used in the sale, transportation and distribution of marijuana.

Mr. Wiltsie was charged with second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a class D felony, and unlawful growing of cannabis, a class A misdemeanor.

He was also issued a uniform traffic ticket for the cell phone violation.

At the time of this release, Mr. Wiltsie was being held awaiting arraignment.
