OSWEGO — The City of Oswego rededicated the Edward A. Maxon East Side Fire Station on Oct. 30, honoring the firefighter who died in the line of duty on May 2, 1956.

City officials, staff and community members attended the morning ceremony, which included the unveiling of new signage displaying Maxon’s name, according to a City of Oswego news release.

Maxon had served the Oswego Fire Department for 20 years before his death while protecting Oswego residents. In 1984, city leaders and members of the department dedicated a memorial in his honor and officially named the facility the Edward A. Maxon East Side Fire Station. The city said the rededication builds on that commitment to preserving his memory.

“Today’s ceremony is about more than a sign. It is about remembrance, honoring sacrifice, and ensuring that the courageous men and women who serve our community are never forgotten,” said Mayor Robert A. Corradino. “As Mayor, I believe it is our responsibility not only to recognize the achievements of our community, but also to remember those whose sacrifices helped shape it. For every firefighter who serves in this station, and for every resident who passes by this building, this sign will tell a story. It will remind us of courage in the face of danger, selflessness in service to others, and an unwavering commitment to protecting our community.”

Corradino thanked Fire Chief Paul Conzone, members of the Oswego Fire Department and everyone who contributed to the project. He also recognized the Maxon family and those who have continued to honor and preserve the firefighter’s legacy.

Conzone spoke about his history with the fire department, his experience learning how the station received its name and the ways Edward A. Maxon’s memory continues to be honored.

Retired Oswego Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Edward C. Maxon, Edward A. Maxon’s grandson, shared personal reflections on his grandfather’s life and his impact on the family and the Oswego community.

The city said the rededication is a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have dedicated their lives to public safety. It reaffirmed its commitment to honoring those who have served and said the station will continue to stand as a tribute to Maxon’s service and sacrifice.
