Sanitary and Storm Smoke Testing November 9th 2026

OSWEGO – The City of Oswego has scheduled smoke testing of storm and sanitary mains for November 9, 2026, from 9 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m., according to a city release.

The city’s Wastewater Department, Department of Public Works and Engineering Department, along with GHD and Camden Group, have been preparing to conduct testing in and around the areas highlighted on the supplied map.

The map marks portions of First Avenue and Hillside Avenue, West Utica Street and West Albany Street near Oswego High School, plus an additional area near Frederick Leighton Elementary School. The marked areas do not encompass the entirety of those streets.

During testing, smoke may enter buildings through piping or vents. It may also be visible in, outside or above buildings, or coming from the road or structures within the roadway.

The city encourages residents to call 911 if smoke is seen in homes, because it may not be related to the testing. The supplied map also instructs: “If you see or smell smoke, call 911.”

The city describes the smoke used specifically for testing as non-toxic, odorless, non-hazardous and non-staining.

The testing relates to ongoing mandates from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency concerning the city’s sanitary system, according to the release.
