Oswego YMCA To Host Free Milk Distribution

OSWEGO – The Oswego YMCA has been added to the sites for free milk distribution on Thursday, May 7. The distribution will take place from approximately 1 to 3 p.m. at the Oswego YMCA located at 265 West First Street in Oswego.

Those who attend should enter into the parking lot on the south side of the YMCA, which faces Dunkin Donuts.

The YMCA, American Dairy Association Northeast, County of Oswego Majority Leader Terry Wilbur, NYS Assembly Minority Leader William Barclay and Dave and Maria Johnson of C’s Beverage are all helping to make this event possible.

Kerrie Ann Webb, Executive Director of the Oswego YMCA knows that many Y member families as well as others in the community are struggling during this time.

“YMCAs are a charitable, nonprofit force for good,” Webb said. “We alway adapt to meet the needs of our community. Today, as the coronavirus impacts the lives of so many in Oswego, the Y is continuing to serve in amazing ways.”

She noted that although the building may be closed for traditional membership and program activities, the Y remains open for providing emergency child care.

With schools and restaurants closed because of COVID-19, farmers and dairy cooperatives in New York have been left with excess supply of fluid milk, causing prices to plummet and forcing farmers across the state to dump supplies that can’t be processed or sold to distributors.

The milk giveaways are part of an effort organized by Dairy Farmers of America, a national cooperative with more than 13,000 members, in the hopes of turning a negative situation for farmers into a positive for local communities.

The Y is one of the nation’s leading nonprofits strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. With over 1,600 members, one in nine people living in the Oswego community is a member of Oswego YMCA.

Daily, youth, adults and families find the support and services they need to improve their quality of life. The Oswego YMCA serves as a community resource providing programs including a variety of Aqua>cs programs and Swim Lessons, Youth, Adult and Family Fitness, Active Older Adult with Silver & Fit and Silver Sneakers opportunities, School Age Childcare, Summer Camp, Parents Night Out and many parent and child programs.

Across the U.S., 2,700 YMCAs engage 22 million men, women and children – regardless of age, income or background – to nurture the potential of children and teens, improve the nation’s health and well-being, and provide opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Anchored in more than 10,000 communities, the Y has the long-standing relationships and physical presence not just to promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change.
