OSWEGO – An adult male and his dog were rescued from the waters of the Oswego Harbor this evening. At 7:38pm a quick-thinking bystander called 911 after a male had entered the water from the Cahill Pier to rescue his dog. The 911 caller stated that the male was struggling in the water and unable to get back to safety. The 911 caller assisted greatly by lowering an article of clothing for the man to hold on to until rescuers arrived. Oswego County 911 quickly dispatched emergency crews to the scene.

Oswego Firefighters and Police Officers arrived within minutes and located the male approximately 170 yards from the shoreline and adjacent to the Cahill Pier. The male was struggling to hang on and keep his head above water as Oswego Police Officers worked feverishly to assist him from their location on the deck of the Cahill Pier. Oswego Firefighters entered the water at 7:45pm and quickly stabilized the male patient and dog. The United States Coast Guard arrived shortly after, and the male and dog were assisted to their vessel safely. Both were moved to the USCG-Station Oswego and the male patient was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

Fire Chief Paul Conzone stated, “Quick actions saved a life tonight, actions by civilians on the scene, actions by Oswego County 911, and actions by our Firefighters and Police Officers. The civilians called 911 immediately and were able to reach the person by extending an article of clothing, allowing him to keep his head above water until our crews effected the rescue. With the water temperature just 42 degrees, people in the water have only a few minutes before they lose motor function. Great teamwork by everyone involved to make the difference tonight.”

The Oswego Fire Department was assisted tonight by the Oswego Police Department, USCG-Station Oswego, Menter Ambulance, Oswego County 911, and the Oswego County Dive Team.
