Scriba Man In Serious Condition Following Shooting

OSWEGO, NY – One man is in the hospital and another behind bars following an early-morning shooting in Scriba today (April 22).

At approximately 4:16 a.m. members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department responded to a shots fired report 145 Skyline Drive.

The investigation revealed that Gerald Penfield, 37, arrived home to discover 45-year-old Gene R. Lagoe in the residence, Sheriff Reuel Todd said during a press conference at his office this afternoon.

Penfield shares the home with his domestic partner, Linda Lagoe, 40, the sheriff explained.

Mr. Lagoe, of the Middle Road, was a guest in the home, he added.

Following a brief altercation, Penfield shot Lagoe in the upper right leg.

Lagoe was airlifted by Mercy Flight helicopter to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

He was in serious condition, the sheriff said.

Mr. Penfield has been charged with first-degree assault, a class B felony and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.

A child, less than 17 years old, was present at the time of the shooting. The sheriff wouldn’t say whether the child witnessed the incident or not.

Penfield was arraigned before Scriba Town Justice Kenneth Adkins and remanded to Oswego County Jail in lieu of $25,000 or $50,000 bond bail.

He is scheduled to appear in Scriba Town Court on April 27.

It doesn’t appear that alcohol played any part in the incident, the sheriff said.

Assisting at the scene were members of the Oswego City fire, ambulance and rescue; Scriba Volunteer Fire Department and Mercy Flight, according to the sheriff.

The sheriff praised the medical personnel who assisted.

“We could have very well have had a homicide. They did an excellent job treating this man. He had severe injuries,” Todd said. “They did a great job.”

There seems to be a slight increase in domestic incidents, maybe because of the economic situation in the area, the sheriff noted.

“Basically, the subject arrived home, found another gentleman in his residence, there was an altercation and Mr. Lagoe was subsequently shot,” the sheriff said.

The home is owned by Mrs. Lagoe and Mr. Penfield, he said, adding, “There are in a domestic relationship. The victim is the former husband.”

Mrs. Lagoe and Mr. Penfield have been in the relationship for about eight years, Todd said.

To the best of his recollection, the sheriff said there hasn’t been a whole lot of problems in that area.

“This is not a home entry. It’s not in any way, shape or manner a burglary. It was a domestic relationship, that, obviously, went very bad,” Sheriff Todd said. “It’s rather cut and dried as to what occurred. People have been pretty open with us.”

Deputies recovered a long gun at the scene, according to the sheriff. missing or outdated ad config
