OSWEGO, NY – The Richard S. Shineman Foundation announced it has awarded Enable a $10,000 grant to expand its parenting program for families of children with autism into Oswego County.
Enabling Parents is a six-week education class that helps parents and caregivers better understand and care for children with an autism spectrum disorder or behavioral issues.
The training will cover topics such as measuring and managing behavior, identifying triggers, monitoring progress and communicating with school personnel.
The goal of the sessions is to develop strategies to improve the quality of life for not only the child with autism, but the entire family.

Shineman Foundation commends Enable’s work and dedication to individuals with disabilities,” said Lauren Pistell, executive director of the foundation. “The Enabling Parents program is directly in line with our foundation’s mission, and our board of directors felt that supporting families of children with autism is increasingly important for our community. We are delighted to partner with Enable to bring this fantastic program to Oswego County.”
“One in 50 children is diagnosed with autism and that diagnosis affects the entire family,” said Prudence York, executive director of Enable. “Parents are asking for help in understanding and managing their child’s behavior. Through Enabling Parents, we can introduce strategies to help families meet the day to day challenges of having a child with autism. We are grateful to the Shineman Foundation for providing the vital funding that will create positive change now and long-term in the lives of these children and their families.”
