OSWEGO, NY – Oswego County STOP-DWI Coordinator Robert Lighthall today (Oct. 30) announced that law enforcement agencies across Oswego County will deploy special DWI enforcement patrols to help ensure that our roadways will be safe during the Halloween weekend.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, on Halloween night in 2012, almost half (48%) of all crash fatalities involved a driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher.

Also in 2012, 19 percent of all pedestrian fatalities on Halloween night involved a drunk driver.

“Children will be out in force on Halloween night and we want to make sure they enjoy Trick-or-Treating. We know adults will be celebrating this weekend and we want to make sure they are doing so in a safe way,” Lighthall said.

Don’t just make Halloween party plans – make a plan to stay alive.

• If you plan on drinking this Halloween, which falls on a Friday night, make arrangements now for how you’ll get home by downloading the free STOP-DWI Have A Plan mobile app at www.stopdwi.org/mobileapp
• Take a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation. Driving impaired is never the solution
• Walking impaired can be just as dangerous as drunk driving, especially on Halloween. Designate a sober friend to walk you home
• If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 911 when it’s safe to do so
• If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make safe travel arrangements to where they are going.

The STOP-DWI crackdowns are comprised of several periods organized by the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation.

These efforts are supported with funding from both the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
