Oswego – The Dedication of the William G. Pomeroy Foundation Historic Transporation Marker for the Harbor
Rail-Trail Oswego River Bridge took place on Wednesday, July 17th, in Oswego. The foundation strongly
believes that historic markers play an important role in local historic preservation. The markers
educate the public and foster heritage tourism, which provides economic benefits to communities
around New York State.
The bridge was opened in 1876 to extend the Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg Railroad tracks over
the Oswego River and was rebuilt in 1912-1914. The city of Oswego acquired the bridge in 1986 and
was opened in July 2001 as the Harbor Rail Trail Riverwalk pedestrian bridge. Trains had a huge
presence years ago in Oswego and the bridge is one of the last railroad-related structure remaining.
The bridge provides a scenic view of the Oswego River and the lake to the north for the walkers,
joggers and bikers who travel the structure daily.
