Trinity Celebrates Music Month In Unique Style

OSWEGO, NY – Trinity Catholic School tweaked some classic nursery rhymes recently.

“This is for our Music In Schools Month observance. The fourth graders are doing a presentation based on nursery rhymes – fractured Mother Goose fairy tales,” Shelly Banner, the school’s vocal music teacher explained.

“It’s something the whole chorus has worked on but the fourth graders absolutely adore it and are going to share it with the rest of the school and their families and friends,” she continued.

The students made their own costumes.

As the fourth graders paraded into the gym, they received a round of applause from the other students, teachers and family members in the audience.

They performed as a group as well as some solos.

Old Mother Hubbard got an infusion of Jazz and a version of Wee Willie Winkie was performed to the music of Queen’s We Will Rock You – and the performers as well as the audience got into the act for the clapping and foot stomping for the chorus.

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star was performed to an Army marching cadence.

“We are fostering some very popular music style in a classical vein,” Banner explained. “The children have come up with some simply but very meaningful props that they will use. They are really doing this. I just kind of helped get it going.”

They only had seven brief rehearsals.

It was Mrs. Banner’s idea, the performers said.

“We said we should do a play about these songs,” exclaimed Mary Bornheimer Little Bo Peep). “We were just talking about it and she said we could!”

Among the characters were Laura Bornheimer (Mama Goose), Trinity Gahagen and Yeonwoo “Annie” Seo (Queen of Hearts), Katerina Porcari (chef), Tanner Coleman (sheep) and Allison Pasco (baker).
