VOLNEY, NY – Two separate garage fires reported in Oswego County on Sunday (April 9) resulted in total losses after multiple departments responded to assist in battling the blazes.

Several fire departments responded to a dispatch to 195 Weller Road at approximately 8:29 a.m. after a fire was reported by a neighbor.

The neighbor was alerted of the fire by his dogs barking. After calling 911, he immediately went to the property to alert the residents.

Despite Volney, Cody, New Haven, Phoenix, Minetto, Palermo and Scriba fire departments responding as well as an ambulance from Menter Ambulance, the garage was a total loss after the fire was entirely extinguished.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Oswego County Cause and Origin Team.

Later that day, at 3:55 p.m. Oswego Town fire units were dispatched to a garage fire on Rathburn Road.

According to the Oswego Town Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page, the first engine was on scene at 4:05 p.m. to find a fully involved 36′ x 72′ garage impinging on a house.

Mutual aid was received from Minetto, Granby, Fair Haven, and Scriba fire departments as well as Menter Ambulance responding to the scene while Hannibal and Cody fire departments assisted with standby units.

“In all, approximately 50 volunteer firefighters worked at the scene for quite a while,” the post detailed.

Also on scene was the Oswego County Fire Coordinator’s Office, Oswego County Cause and Origin Team, National Grid, Oswego Town Highway Department and the OTVFD Coffee Squad.

Final units left the scene at 9:43 p.m. and were back in service at 10:30 p.m.

“The garage was a total loss as were the contents. We were able to save the families home. Thank you again to all the mutual aid departments that assisted and the volunteer firefighters that gave their afternoon/evening to assist with this incident,” the post said.
