OSWEGO, NY – Winter has taken an early foothold on our community this year, and we have received numerous phone calls inquiring about the city of Oswego’s Winter Parking Ban.
First, let me take this opportunity to thank the citizens who have taken it upon themselves to move their vehicles off of the streets during the night time hours.
I can’t express enough just how much this seemingly minor adjustment in your parking habit assists our DPW work crews in clearing the streets.
As stated in the Code of The City of Oswego, “The Mayor, at his discretion, may impose a winter parking ban commencing on or after December 1 and continuing through March 31. The Mayor may suspend or remove the winter parking ban prior to March 31 at his discretion if winter conditions permit. During such time as the winter parking ban is imposed, the parking of any vehicle on all highways and streets shall be prohibited between the hours of 1 and 6 a.m.â€ÂÂ
We all know how unpredictable winter weather can be in the Port City, which is why I will evaluate the need to make the parking ban effective once the December 1 date draws near.
I will make an official announcement as to the date that the parking ban will go into effect and, as in years past, the Oswego City Police Department will be issuing courtesy citations for the first couple of nights of the ban.
Additionally, I would like to emphasize the importance of obeying the City Code, as violators may be ticketed and towed.
The fine for a vehicle found to be violating the parking ban is $50 and that will increase to $100 if the fine is not paid within 30 days from issuance.
The typical tow fee of $75 may also be applicable.
