OSWEGO COUNTY – Residents affected by the water issues in the Town of Scriba Water District will be able to get potable water from three fire stations later today, the Oswego County Emergency Management Office announced.
Some residents of the towns of Scriba, New Haven and northern part of Volney have not had water pressure since two water main breaks occurred on Tuesday, Jan. 21. While town officials expect water pressure to be restored later today, residents will be able to get potable water from the following locations today, Jan. 23:
- Volney Fire Department, 3002 NYS Rte. 3, Fulton, 3 to 6 p.m.
- Oswego Fire Department Station 1, 35 E. Cayuga St., Oswego, 3 to 6 p.m. People should go to the back entrance off East Seneca Street and use the buzzer.
- Mexico Fire Department, 3284 Main St., Mexico, 6 to 9 p.m.
People should bring their own clean containers to fill up at these fire stations. These locations are outside the Scriba Water District and are unaffected by the boil-water order.
The boil water order from the Oswego County Health Department remains in effect until system pressure is restored and testing confirms there is no contamination. The Health Department will notify residents when they no longer need to boil their water.
According to the Oswego County Health Department, the water system lost pressure due to two water main breaks, one just off City Line Road and the other just off County Route 4 in the Town of Scriba. Samples will be collected to confirm there is no contamination in the distribution system.
While the boil water order is in effect, residents are advised to bring tap water to a rolling boil, boil for one minute and cool before using. They can also use bottled water certified for sale by the New York State Department of Health.
Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills most bacteria and other organisms in the water.
