Household Hazardous Waste Facility Prepares for Season Closure Sept. 30

OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County Department of Solid Waste encourages residents to bring their unwanted chemicals, pesticides and other hazardous waste products to the Oswego County Household Hazardous Waste Facility before it closes for the year on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The facility is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays, and from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays, making the final dates for the year: Sept. 19, 23, 26 and 30. The facility is located at the Bristol Hill Landfill, 3125 NYS Rte. 3, Volney.

Customers are asked to pull their vehicle up to the side of the building, located between the transfer station and solid waste offices, and remain in the car while staff unload the materials. For safety reasons, please do not bring children or pets to the collection site, and smoking in the unloading area is prohibited.

Household hazardous waste items may be toxic, flammable, corrosive or reactive. It is important to dispose of these items safely, as improper disposal poses dangers for humans, pets and the environment.

The following items are accepted at the collection facility: adhesives, aerosols, antifreeze, auto batteries, light ballasts (non-PCB), brake fluid, cements, degreasers, disinfectants, dry gas, flea products, fluorescent bulbs, gasoline, hobby chemicals, household cleaners, insect repellants,  lacquers, lighter fluids, lubricants, mercury-containing devices, paint removers and thinners, pesticides, pool chemicals, rat poisons, rug and upholstery cleaners, solvents, turpentine, varnish, weed killers and wood stains.

Materials should be in their original containers with the labels on and placed in sturdy cardboard boxes in the back of the vehicle. Leaking containers should be wrapped in newspaper and placed in a clear plastic bag. Materials should never be mixed, and explosives of any kind are not accepted at the facility.

The Household Hazardous Waste Facility has also partnered with PaintCare, serving as a drop-off site for leftover latex and oil-based architectural paints, primers, stains, sealers and varnishes. Products can be up to five gallons in size and must be brought to the facility in their original containers with the manufacturer labels intact. Residents can bring a total of 25 gallons per visit.

It’s important for residents to note that all transfer stations in the county are now accepting lithium-ion batteries to ensure safe disposal. A collection box is available at each transfer station, and residents can ask an attendant for more information.

Lithium-ion batteries power items such as rechargeable or cordless tools; small appliances such as cordless or robot vacuum cleaners or toothbrushes; toys such as ride-on vehicles, gaming consoles or remote-controlled toys and drones; as well as hoverboards, e-bikes and scooters, and electric cars.

These types of lithium-ion batteries can also be recycled at the point of purchase, including stores such as Harbor Freight, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Target and Walmart. Look for collection boxes at participating retailers or go to www.call2recycle.org/locator to find one near you. You can also visit Battery Recyclers of America to schedule a pick-up for lithium-ion batteries.

Free to Oswego County residents, the HHW facility is sponsored by the Oswego County Legislature and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and managed by the Oswego County Department of Solid Waste.

Oswego County businesses that generate small quantities of hazardous waste and meet the regulatory requirements may be able to use the facility also. Business owners should contact the Oswego County Department of Solid Waste to find out if they qualify and to obtain a cost estimate for disposal of materials.

The Oswego County Household Hazardous Waste Facility will re-open in May 2027.

Regular transfer stations remain open year-round and accept used motor oil, household batteries and appliances containing CFC refrigerants. There is no charge for county residents to recycle electronic equipment such as computer monitors, microwave ovens, fax machines and televisions. There is a $20 fee to recycle appliances that contain CFC refrigerants such as air conditioners and refrigerators.
