OSWEGO COUNTY – Potassium iodide (KI) is still available to people who live in the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone surrounding the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Power Site in Scriba. The tablets are available at the Oswego County Emergency Management Office in Fulton and the Oswego County Health Department in Oswego. Residents are encouraged to call and schedule a time to pick up the tablets.
Oswego County distributes one 65mg tablet for every child weighing less than 150 pounds and two 65mg tablets (totaling 130mg) for every adult in a household.
“In the event of a radiological emergency at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Power Site, radioactive materials could be released into the atmosphere,” said Oswego County Emergency Management Director Cathleen Palmitesso. “Potassium iodide is an over-the-counter mineral salt that can help protect the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine.”
It is important to note that KI provides limited protection. Evacuation of the affected population would be the primary protective action during an emergency at one of the nuclear power plants and KI should only be taken when directed by emergency officials.
During an emergency, people should follow the instructions of county officials, which will be announced through the Emergency Alert System on radio and television stations and posted online at www.oswegocountyny.gov.
KI is available for pick up from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at the Oswego County Emergency Management Office, 200 N. Second St., Fulton, 315-591-9150, and at the Oswego County Health Department, 70 Bunner St. in Oswego, 315-349-3573.
Palmitesso also reminded residents within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone that they should have recently received a postcard from Constellation Energy announcing the availability of the 2025-2026 “Emergency Planning for the Nine Mile Point & James A. FitzPatrick Clean Energy Centers.”
The postcard includes a form for individuals with access and functional needs to identify what assistance they may require during a nuclear power plant emergency. Anyone who may need help during an emergency is encouraged to return the card.
Residents who did not receive a postcard or who would like a paper copy of the public information brochure mailed to them may call the Oswego County Emergency Management Office at 315-591-9150.
